To an extent that is true, but there is also a flip side. If an outsider "intrudes" in their setting, they can sometimes be just as judgemental because they are the authority figures. The "nerds" may be outcasts from the "cool" world, but they then create their own world and turn everyone else into outsiders.
Not always, of course, but it does seem to be human nature to desire to be part of a group and then becomes a mark of status when you can exclude others.
