i love almost everything AA says.
but to get back on topic, i love the pics of the clan macpherson chiefs for demonstrating their (as jock scot put it) own flair and using blended matching colors (as opposed to solids in the us). the various clan chiefs look very much at home in their attire. they stand out yet fit in.
for my job, i have to be somewhat formal. i will wear a boring corporate grey suit and blah tie when absolutely necessary, but i more often wear suits that look out of place in a funeral parlor and much more often wear slacks and sport coats to express my personal flair as much as possible while still being appropriate for the setting/event. it is good to stand out from the herd while being recognized as part of the herd.
when not at work--as others have said, wear what would be appropriate ... just substitute the kilt for pants. most people i have found will give you a "bonus letter grade" for wearing a kilt and seem to think you are "extra" dressed up, and you do not need to add extra do dads-unless you want to add your own extra flair.
