Yes, the deer hide is very soft. I had to add stiffeners along the front edges and the front is layered in several places. The top of the back has a stiffener down to just below the strap attachment D-rings and the entire interior is lined with another layer of deer hide. Even with all of that, it is still lighter than my pin-latch standard leather day sporran.
