Colin,
I would advise so..."saxon" jackets, which are cut for trousers, hide the pleats in a kilt and take away that "swing" that women love when they watch a kilted lad from behind.
You could always get a charcoal day jacket which would work for both day and evening events wear a bit more formality is called for, and it might be cheaper -- be sure to get the vest to go with it, though.
