For those new to non-button-down collars and are wanting to look at your sharpest, then you may need to get a pair of collar stays/stiffeners. These help keep the collar "points" straight. Often the new shirt arrives with a pair of plastic stiffeners already in place on the underside of the collar in a wee slot/pouch either side of the collar. ------Sometimes these plastic stays are sewn into the shirt so nothing can be done to improve things----------- .These removable plastic stays work quite well, but more solid ones are better. These are made of silver, brass, aluminium, ivory, bone or some such. WARNING! REMEMBER to take them out BEFORE putting the shirt into the washing machine!

To those who don't know what collar stays/stiffeners are, they are the silver boat shaped things just above the pocket watch.
