If you want to jump into kiltmaking I highly recommend taking one of Elsie Stuehmeyer's classes. She's getting up in age and who know how much longer she'll want to travel all over doing these workshops. She's a treasure for sure, full of knowledge but also of many wonderful stories from the 1940s up through today. (I don't know if she travels to the UK though. I wonder who the UK equivalent might be, if anyone.)
No machine-sewing is required; I did my kilt entirely by hand.
I wish I knew how to use a sewing machine though! It would open up many new things.
