Here in the U.S. our society concerns itself far less with which family you claim a link to (outside of the extreme example of the post-Civil War Hatfields and McCoys of Kentucky and West Virginia.) Particularly when you discuss it with younger people.
But there are those in Scotland and elsewhere, for whom those ties mean a great deal. Out of respect for them, my own ancestors, and others for whom such ties are important, I prefer it be generally understood that "it matters" to some.
