I didn't fancy Spain as some parts are a little too Anglicised now (too many English out there) but can recommend the Algarve as a good destination. Decent apartments there from €185,000 too. 
I've never been to Portugal but geographically it must be like the rest of the peninsular, so no real desire to go on my part, nor the ability, as I must work all through the summer here. We had the hottest July for 30 years and I experienced prickly heat for the first time since we moved here. It usually doesn't rain here from June until September and can get to 50 Deg. However we had some thunder storms this month which was nice, apart from a nearby apartment being struck by lightning.
There are a lot of Brits living here too, but also Dutch and German, we keep the economy going! My apartment cost €132,000 in 2008. They can now be bought for €60,000 which is why I'm stuck here.
