Unfortunately we cannot trust artist' pictures, it's wrong way to make final conclusions about details of military uniforms  In this particular case I suppose - it's because poor quality of image.
There are numerous photos of Cameron Highlanders ORs, lots of real sporrans and NO ONE of them has metal cantle...
look at this real photo, we can see highlights on the black leather parts.
