The Underhose...
These guys (SB) make pretty darned good (no sock pun intended) compression socks. Pretty Wife was quite amused when she sourced some for me in argyle patterns -- I'm wearing the grey as I type this. While I scarcely think they'd make acceptable substitutes for diced hose, when worn beneath they're remarkably handy for helping to hold up knitted hose (not to mention helping to prevent deep vein thrombosis, edema, diabetic sores, etc.).
As a side bonus to those of us with perpetually lean shanks, they bulk up one's kilt hose slightly, but noticeably. Far easier than 1,000 calf raises at the gym. ;)
