Tartan Day is a holiday honouring Scottish heritage in Canada & the USA; the holiday started in Canada, and then later moved south, where it was officially recognized by the US Senate in 1998. Many states have also officially recognized Tartan Day, and many Scottish-American societies, etc. hold special events, parades, etc. The events usually highlight the contributions Scots & Scots-Irish immigrants have made to Canada & the United States.

April 6th was chose since April 6, 1320, was the date the Declaration of Arbroath was signed at Arbroath Abbey, in which Scots nobles appealed to the Pope to recognize Scottish independence from the English. There is a resemblance between this declaration and the American Declaration of Independence.
