Seven years ago for most of the winter of 1999-2000 I wore ladies' heavy duty panty hose for edema (swelling of my legs) due to complications from lymphoma. I found them quite comfortable and warm, even in the coldest weather, even during some very severe snow storms, and couldn't understand why so many women say they don't like them.
