some of you would like to see Samuel, Martha, Katherine, and Christiana
This is Martha Romney and Katherine Piercy Romney. Katherine is about 16 in this painting and is the girl in the back. She is my great grandmother. The family legend has it that they'd commissioned a painting of each of the girls, but money got tight, so they asked Ane. Gibert to paint Katherine into Martha's picture. It's obvious that she was added later, of course, but isn't Katherine beautiful?

Here is Samuel Crockett, painted in Philadelphia right around 1800. He is buried in Woodlands cemetary. Samuel was born in England and emigrated to the very new country just aftr the Revolutionary war.

Finally, here is my beloved Christiana. Christiana Crockett is her name, and she is Samuels daughter. She is probably about 16 or 17 in this picture, but to me she looks older than that. I know that the artwork on her is not as good as it is on Martha and Katherine, and that Christiana's neck is exaggerated, as in the style of portraiture of the time. Still, to me, even with her rounded features and somber expression, Christiana is beautiful. She looked down and watched my life as I grew up, for as long as I can remember.
