Yeah, if he/they were my friends, I'd have told the police. Depending on their reactions the next day, they might stay friends.
Besides the "clothing,not a religion" issue here, there's a bit of hypocrisy. Some of the comments about chick magnet, and kilt lifting in other threads look like some people wouldn't mind this happening to them. Three-thirty in the a.m., willing partner, in the backyard: how bad can that be?
Obviously, the media is leaving stuff out for the sake of the story. Most other countries wouldn't make so much of this. Apart from the kilt thing, but that adds to the legend (there's an interesting old quote if you google some of the keywords from the story and John Masters. I'm not going to supply it.)
