You would be adding the pleat from the beginning of the apron and not the end of it, so the buckles "should" be fine. I'm not wearing a kilt right now so I don't know if this is truly possible or not. If it doesn't work you could always use a seam ripper and take off the buckels and reattach them. Just a thought.
