In battle, hair was often short in front (so enemy couldn't grab it) but long in the back (if you turned and ran instead of fighting, you usually got butchered while fleeing).
It was also shorter in the front to keep it from interfering with one's field of vision. The extra hair in the back was also an additional layer of padding (every little bit helps). Thus, the perfect hairstyle would have been .... the mullet.
