The Kilted Mile Run
Wearing athletic socks and running shoes goes particularly well with a camo kilt, but makes sense with any kilt if you're going to be running. In most competitions just leave off the sporran. And one old-timer told me to twist the kilt around backwards, putting the pleats in front, to allow greater freedom of movement for the knees. (It was inconclusive whether it increased my speed.
) The focus on athleticism, competitive or not, means you'll probably not be wearing an 8-yd 16 oz wool traditional. Running for a clan, I wear a 5-yd 13 oz wool tartan casual of my own make. If kilts be clothes, not costume, then apply practical "rules" when deciding how to dress for specific activities.
The flyer for the race said, "Run Like Your Kilt Is On Fire!" Below is one post of me and Casey before, during, and after running the kilted mile at the Pleasanton, CA games this last summer. (Note: I'm older than that highway number...
... and felt twice that after the footrace. Also note the liberal application of water to quench the fire in the lungs.)
