Red Sea Rig
For an alternative, there's always "Red Sea Rig":

Of course, it depends on if you're going "east of Suez" or to tropical climes. Red Sea Rig is an old Royal Navy custom. I normally wouldn't cite wikipedia, but at least this entry has sources cited:

Really, though -- rental is probably your best option. Don't let anyone disuade you because of their dislike of formal wear; if you feel it is appropriate, then wear what you want.
