I've never been to Rothesay but I believe it is a shadow of its heyday when your grandparents went there. Everyone jets off abroad nowadays. Actually if you drive down the Clyde coast from Glasgow to Gourock you can carch a ferry there to Dunoon then come back and on to Wemyss Bay to catch a ferry to Rothesay then back and on to Largs for another ferry over to Cumbrae. After that on to Ardrossan for a ferry to Arran and when you come back on to Troon and take the ferry to Larne. All those ferry trips within a few miles drive of each other - but not all in one day of course. I think my favourite ferry trip was from Oban to Mull. It docks at Craignure and a bus meets you there for the trip to Tobermory unless you take your transport with you to explore the island and take a trip to Iona.
