I've worn a Rolex Submariner since 1967. In all of that time it has only required servicing twice, despite having taken a pounding on three continents in all sorts of conditions. I replaced the bracelet twice-- once after I crashed a car at something in excess of 160mph, and again last year when that bracelet was mangled when I was tinkering with my Morgan. I've found the watch to be utterly reliable, and as accurate as a Mauser rifle. I have two other watches-- a Patek Phillipe and my mugger's watch, a Citizen that looks expensive but only cost $29, that I wear when I'm going into DC.
Here's the thing; if you want a Rolex-- get one. People who live their lives by Consumer Reports, or who constantly count the cost of everything, usually miss out on the tiny joys in life. The watch won't get any cheaper, you're not getting any younger, and if you don't indulge yourself once in a while, what's the point of life?
