Research Help Stewart in St. Croix
Greetings all,
I have a challenge for Tartan / Clan history experts. Does anyone know any history of members of STEWART on the Island of St. Croix, US Virgin Islands? This one island has had almost every nation's flag claiming this island starting with Spain, post Chris Columbus' "Good will tour." Then Dutch and England ( back and forth and at one point shared ownership.) France 1651. Then 1661 Malta under the Knights of Malta. 1665-1733 France once again purchased the island from knights of Malta.
In 1733, the French Government sold St. Croix to the Danish West India & Guinea Co. Danes made a clever move by allowing immigrants of other nationalities to move in. The English soon dominated the populations and English became the language spoken on the streets.
My Great/ Great/ Grand father was a Stewart. All I know is the Stewart of that line came to St. Croix and owned land (sugar plantation) the only link validating that was my Grandmother and her two late sisters each had a small parcel of land passed down.
If any one knows of any history of Stewarts in the Caribbean , please private message me. Thanks
