James, fifth Earl of Wemyss, in Archers’ uniform, by an unknown artist, c. 1715.
The Royal Company of Archers, who are the Queen’s bodyguard in Scotland, were the first organised body to adopt tartan as a uniform.

Helen Balfour, wife of Gavin Hamilton, who was painted by William Mosman in 1742, wears the tartan screen or shawl popular in the eighteen century.
