The boxlike drum used by the ceilidh band is called a "cajon" basically a wooden box with a tone hole that you sit on and play, they come in many different woods and styles, some with adjustable snares inside and some even have foot pedals to alter the sound.

Thanks very much for the info on the drum. It's a fascinating instrument because it's just a box but can produce an amazing variety of sounds.
The bugs were non-exhistant last weekend.
