AAAAGGH!!!!! That's terrible! And very compelling evidence to have the kilt cleaned (either hand-washed or dry-cleaned - or anywhere along that spectrum) on a regular basis.
If you hadn't said it was moth damage, I would have thought it was wear from an extremely sedentary kilt-wearer.
