So you have one cilt that has led an adventurous life, three that are domesticated and two that hang around bored until the next special occasion. I'm sure the five sheltered cilts envy the one. Cilts are safe in the closet but that is not what cilts are for.

As much as it is sad to see a nice kilt get worn entirely out, it is nice to know that your kilt was so well made that it could withstand years of hard-wearing lifestyle. It also goes to show the kilt CAN be worn anytime...anywhere.

I am glad you were able to enjoy your kilt so much in such a wide range of activities.

Sadly the number of kilt makers that have gone out of business over the years in Scotland does appear to confirm some of what you say.Their reasons for doing so are no doubt many and various, but economics must be high on the list of reasons.

Now that's a sad sight... What material is the kilt made from? Wool or something else? If you're settling with safety-pinned patches for now, a few iron-on patches or some fabric and applique paper applied under the apron could at least hold it together in a way that doesn't risk further tearing.

That kind of damage could be exactly what the kilt needs to go mainstream - just like jeans sold with the pre-worn, pre-patched holes in the knees. Should take care of the whole "Kilts are just for weddings, right?" mentality ;-)

The kilt has seen action in many a war and come through with flying colours. The only difference between those and Derek's(apart from the tartan) is that HE had to pay for his out of his own pocket! I doubt that a grateful nation will equip him with a replacement either!
