Having had some limited connection with the acting profession it would be most unlikely that only one of any item of costume would be bought - the cost incurred by a delay would far outweigh the price of two jackets.
The upset which ocurred when a pot of paint was spilt on a frock just before a dress rehersal had to be seen to be believed, and it was washable.
I could see the rationale behind using a cheaper version in a scene where the destruction of a garment was almost certain - beating out a fire or the like, and where a long lead time to acquire an item might influence what is purchased.
I always feel uneasy when told 'the fact is' or something like that - as it always seems to preceed something a bit doubtful.
