    Smile Going to Scotland!

I just received a small inheritance and have decided to go to Newtonmore for the Clan Macpherson gathering. I never thought it would be possible and if I dont take advantage of this opportunity it most likely wont come around again. Any advise for a first time traveller? I would like to see as much as possible, will probably be there 2 weeks. Admin, if there is a better forum for this please move this thread. Thanks!

    Wonderful news!!!

Excellent decision to attend the Clan Macpherson Gathering and Rally for 2012!!! My lovely wife, Stephanie and I will be in attendance next summer as well. I have attended many, many times, and know Badenoch very well. You may have observed from many of my posts, I am a staunch supporter of the Clan Macpherson Association and have served in a leadership capacity in various roles within the association. I am also a very active member, and am good friends with a good majority of Macphersons, or as wel like to call, "cousins." Have you checked the official Clan Macpherson Association website yet? That would be the first place I'd recommend you look to get an idea of what to expect and how to plan your itinerary. Please feel free to PM me at any time if you would should need any additional advice, i.e., places to stay, car hire, Clan Macpherson areas of interest, etc. We look forward to seeing you at the gathering next August!!!

A photo from this year's gathering.

Clan Macpherson men, marching onto the games field, referred to as the "Eilan."

Me hiking around the hills of Badenoch, near Newtonmore.

Me chatting with Lachlan Macpherson of Glentruim, Macpherson Chieftain, at the Clan Macpherson tent located on the Eilan.

A frosty pint! Me at the Clan Macpherson ball in Kingussie, where we dance reels all night long!

A couple of weeks would allow you to see a good bit of the country, as long as you're mobile.

A good general resource is the Undiscovered Scotland website.

If you can get hold of a copy beforehand, Pete Irvine's Scotland the Best book is usually extremely reliable. I think an up to date edition of that might be due quite soon, incidentally.

Oh, and August in Newtonmore - bring midge repellent.

Have a great time. We were in Scotland in 09, and the whole family loved it. My sons are asking when they can go back.

Badenoch and Speyside is a beautiful area of Scotland to visit, the towns such as Newtonmore, Kingussie and Aviemore are a bit too touristy for my liking but there is plenty of opportunity to get away hiking among magnificent scenery.

Really? Those towns are not that touristy in my opinion - especially Kingussie - I have family that lives there, right off of Gynack Road near the Duke of Gordon Hotel.
