Re: Planning an everyday sgian dubh

    Ok, step by step.

    1) right off the bat, I figured why reinvent the wheel. So I stripped off the rubber from the handle of my bootknife.

    2) with the tang exposed, I measured the antler via calibrated eyeball and cut it to size.

    3) I ground down the tang to make it straight.
    4) Sorry, no photo of drilling out the antler, but here's the knife roughly fitted.

    5) next I dug up a chunk of brass and rough shaped it.

    6) I striped the rubber off the hilt and machined up the brass. Here's the new hilt, cold pressed onto the blade.

    7) I filled the antler with binary epoxy and dust from the antler. I slid in the tang of the blade and let it set.

    8) a little fine sanding later and here it is.

It was fun, the next time itll come out more refined.

Thumbs up Re: Planning an everyday sgian dubh

That looks way nicer that an "everyday" sgian dubh. Nice and quick work. I have an antler handled sgian dubh that I inherited from my father. I especially like it for that reason and also because it is flattened on one side and it really hugs the leg -stays put in the kilt hose (/boot?). Keep up the good work!
