    Peek into our "Factory"

Sorry ... couldn't help it. There is no way I could ever honestly describe my workshop as a factory but I wanted to show a little bit of where I build my kilts.

I am not exaggerating when I say we are a very small company. With a grand total of three employees, with two of them being part time, we are the very definition of small. There is no factory behind our kilts - just one woman at a sewing machine. Our workshop occupies about 800 sq. feet of a 2200 sq ft studio space which we share with 3 other artists (Alt.Kilt takes up the biggest dedicated chunk). I have an 8'x8' work table space made up of two custom tables that are made to my height so I don't spend all day hunched over. I need to add some shots of my fabric racks and scrap table - which gets turned into all of our Steampunk accessories by Jenn.

This is it... this is everything. I made 275 kilts in this space last year and have already turned out 240 kilts this year. I don't more space than this - it is suited perfectly to Alt.Kilt.

    Thanks!

I like that big table. I wish I had one in my "creative room" which doubles as the spare upstairs bedroom.

"delegate with authority" That's a good quote.

It isn't big, but it's a lot more space than I have. Of course, I'm not churning out over 250 kilts a year though. It's more like 12...and not for business but for fun.

I'm a bit envious of that big table too! I think you just gave me an idea for my next project.

Always nice to see the 'cottage industry' companies showing just what they are - a bunch of ordinary people doing a gigantuan task and making it seem easy.

It also helps when people can take a look and think "Ok, maybe the price/leadtime is reasonable as they're not actually a sweatshop but real people doing a damn good job with what little they've got".

Someone should come up with an award for 'the little people' who always seem to put some of the 'big boys' to shame...

That's a darn good idea! Since I can't speak for anyone but myself, I'd love to see it happen. Maybe, we as a forum, should do just that, Perhaps it's time for an XMTS award for businesses. It won't mean much to Joe Blow, but for those who do this for a living it would mean something since it's recognition from the community they cater to.

    Just one guy's opinion.

Always love getting a peak behind the scenes. Especially, behind the scenes of a small business that seems to have such a penchant for doing the great work that you do. May you have many more years of success from your small space.
