That's exactly where I am right now myself! I totally want a new "general wear" kilt in the Tara (Murphy) tartan to have by Christmas and for St. Patrick's Day! (Which is my birthday by the way). I feel another dreaded jones attack coming on...

A "Jones" is a hankering for something that you know is coming, but somehow you still have to wait. Like jonesing for a cigarette if you're addicted.

Im definitely jonesing for this new skirt. Xmas isnt coming soon enough. I feel like I want to be one of those little kids who, in the middle of march, find a toy and then they say "buy it now and I promise I wont ask for anything for xmas!" even though we all know thats never true.

Meghan, go for it! I love to see women in long skirts.
The style and cut would be important, of course (since I’ve only read the first page of this thread, there might have been much discussion on this angle), but don’t be afraid of the length.

Sorry for putting my $0.02 in so late in this thread but I noticed that both L.L. Bean and Orvis have womens long tartan dresses in their catalogues. I don't think they are pleated just straight cut, but they do look very nice. My wife use to wear a Black Watch Tartan long skirt at Xmas with a dark blue velvet jacket. She looked stunning.

I wouldnt mind seeing those dresses even to just get ideas of styles that could be made with the tartan

I am pretty particular about wanting mine to have some significance to my heritage so I would pay the extra $$ for a specific tartan

Meghan, my congratulations on your choice of County Cork for the tartan – I really like the variety of Irish tartans available, and would love to see them worn more.
I like the style you have picked, too.
But I can assure you, the jones will not only be until you get this one at Christmas. You will want more and more.
One of our lady members uses this quote: “I have a disease, and the only cure is more kilt!”
The Wisconsin tartan is also a great choice, although I notice that the Celtic Themes version differs somewhat from the sample posted – the sample is identical to the sett shown at the Scottish Register of Tartans.
The SRT also shows a sett called Wisconsin in Scotland, which has a blue ground with red stripes. (The red has yellow guards, and there are also narrow grey and white stripes – one of the white stripes forms a cross on the blue, and the other crosses the red.)
Maple Leaf would be an excellent choice for autumn colours (after all, Canada is just across the state line from you).
And aside from the German National tartan (which, having been designed by Rocky Roeger, is American) there is also a Germany tartan in the colours of the German flag.
The tartan used for more than a century to represent Germany was the Coburg tartan (associated with Queen Victoria’s second son, Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, who became the reigning Duke of Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha). It has colours you might like.

I found this and they have WALKER tartan....for $130 for a hostess skirt.... that cant be right. Either that skirt is made out of plastic wrap where Walker tartan is drawn on with sharpies, or its a fishy seller...

cause thats WAY too good to be true.

Thoughts? Is this seller legit? Am I missing something? You guys know what buying kilts are like and I don't so please help me.

Ok, I figured it out. Walker is a special weave so it woudl cost me like $400

but seriously, $130 for an Irish American or Irish National or Heritage of Scotland or Scotland forever tartan hostess skirt? Is that still right? That seems so cheap!!
