Re: "Well my kilt is pure wool - 35 yards"

I believe that I have the proper answer. It is strictly in the mathematics.

If a proper modern style mans kilt is approximately 8 yards,

And a Man in a kilt is a Man and a Half.

    This makes the modern kilt now 12 yards (8 x 1.5 = 12).

Obviously, the gent is a Manly Man amungst Men (3 men x 12 = 36 yards) who just happens to be slightly bad at basic mathematics.

And Ya'll ought to be ashamed at picken' on him for his math skills.
I've found that most relationships work best when no one wears pants.

You're just about right... Actually, I don't think his math skills are off at all. Remember, the key word here is approximately 8 yards. Given the sett size, as well as the physical stature of a gentleman, a bespoke kilt will vary somewhat in yardage. So let's approach the problem in reverse, using your premise that he is a manly man amongst men...

35 yards divided by 3 men is 11.6667... Which, divided by 1.5 is 7.778 yards. 0.222 of a yard (the difference from 8 yards) is about 8 inches... Now I think it's perfectly feasible that there be an 8 inch difference between the standard 8 yards and the bespoke kilt that this man had ordered.

I go back to the venue.....alcohol would make the wisest person in the world stupid.

Mr. 35 yarder no doubt had a good load of stupid juice on board at the time of his comment.
