You may have survived because you were not only conscientious, but lucky too. Driver education, bike lanes, lower speed limits in the city, etc. I'm sure have all helped keep you safe.
Take my examples where I did everything I could to be riding a bike safely, but was almost killed when 1) someone opened their car door unexpectantly and I went head over heels, wreaking the bike, but I managed to roll with it and walked away with a bruise; 2) when someone reached out their car window to pinch my ***, scaring me silly and I drove into the gravel having the bike fall beneath me, but I was able to control the fall and walk away.
I managed not to sustain serious injury in any of my accidents, but none of them were the result of my actions. I believe that wearing a helmet would help keep a person safe from the stupidity of others.
