Re: Run in with "Kilt Police"
I have a simple method to handle these folks in any but a casual setting.
I keep a business card holder in my pocket/sporran (depending on the dress level) with calling cards holding this website's url on it. I politely let them know I appreciate their input, but this is not the appropriate venue to debate these finer points of fashion, hand them the card, and invite them to join our community for an enjoyable debate on these issues. I also point out there are a number of kilt makers, a former Curator of a museum specifically dedicated to the history of the kilt and highland dress, and goodly number of actual Highlanders and historians with which hold a great knowledge of "proper" and historical methods of dress. (Sorry for putting you on the spot, Jock, Matt, et. al.).
Then, I pointedly turn away and continue my conversation I was already involved in.

Wonderful idea. I know what is going to be in my next order from Vistaprint.

Astounding... The world is full of 'em. And it's true, the expertise we have available within the membership is invaluable. What ticks me off the most is, it is usually people in trousers who are the most vociferous with their opinions on Kilting.

Aye John and some of them are not males in trousers! (I speak from personal experience!)

Kilt Police? You mean there are others out there? Is there a union?

Re: Run in with "Kilt Police"
I have a friend who makes 18th century reproduction knives and tomahawks, and also dabbles in making flintlock smoothbores. However, the minute someone shows them their new knife, tomahawk, or flintlock, he begins to pick it apart. He means well and knows the subject well but everyone finds his "suggestions" insulting so consequently they've stopped sharing/showing him what they have. I've gotten to the point that if I show him something, I tell him I'm not interested in hearing what is wrong with it.
The point here is that even some of the "kilt police" may mean well, but they lack people skills to communicate diplomatically - or worse yet, unable to keep their nose out of other people's business. On the other hand, I think most of just uniformed but opinionated and rude jerks.
I've seen some strange kilted combinations but, short of the pleats being worn in front, I keep my opinions to myself.

Right on! but...
I have never seen anyone wearing a Kilt with with pleats forward. Other than in pictures that is... Not sure how I'd handle it if I did.

You'd have to have a word... wouldn't you?
"One of these things is not like the others,
One of these things just doesn't belong,
Can you tell which thing is not like the others
By the time I finish my song?"

Re: Run in with "Kilt Police"
Sounds like a grand evening--spending it in the company of American heros and a bottle or three of Glenmorangie.
I'm sure you thanked them for their service.
All said, I can't see anything wrong with the evening.
Oh, there may have been some fools there, but they can be forgotten.

Re: Run in with "Kilt Police"
I have a very low tolerance for fools and have been known on occasion to tell the miscreant to simply "F*CK OFF! Blunt, short and to the point. It usually ends the critique.
