choosing a tartan

The way I feel about wearing another clan's tartan and the way I feel about someone else wearing "mine" seem to be opposing.
My mother and grandfather are MacLachlans. My grandmother a Macdonald. I personally would not feel right wearing anything but those two clans' tartans.
On the other hand, if I met someone wearing either one just because they liked how it looked, I would be flattered that they liked my clan's tartan.

According to some it's considered not proper to wear your wife's family tartan but by all means go for it. Especially since you do have Muirhead and Thompson blood in your veins.

*I learned to talk as a young child.

Just to clarify,

He isn't inquiring about wearing his wife's family tartan, rather he is referring to his mother's family tartan(s), which is perfectly proper for him to claim for his own.

You might find that there is a link - although a tenuous one, with a tartan you particularly like.

I have some ancient Armstrong tartan which I just had to buy.

Recently I was looking up Sapphire as a car name and found it was made in the 1950s by Armstrong Siddeley, and it was available with an optional Wilson gearbox design.

Before WWII my father worked with his granddad and great uncle Wilson, they were engineers working on huge factory steam engines. Dad was always interested in the Sapphires - though he never said why.

Could it be the same family of Wilsons? Well - who knows, but there is something to talk about if I was ever challenged about it.
