Re: Clan MacMutt
Hmm, I already have a kilt in Hunting Stewart as per my Scottish born grandfather. The Caledonia tartan is nice and a tartan not associated with another clan would seem to be more appropriate for Clan McMutt.
OK, the truth is that I really like the Caledonia tartan, and I would welcome an excuse to have another kilt made.

Re: Clan MacMutt
Not to be a thread killer, but is not the Xmarks tartan sort of a Clan McMutt sett already? It just seems we might be re-inventing the wheel here.
Once again the Prussians in my background are marching in steel helmets for order while the borderers are rounding up the ponies to go riding. Do what you must.

That being said, there IS a Clan MacBubba :

Our family dog when I was a child was a Chesapeake Bay Retreiver, but his name was Mr. Mutt. Oh, now I want to see a MacMutt clan badge and tartan!

Re: Clan MacMutt
I apologize if I was a bit obtuse in my previous posting. My suggestion of the Hunting Stewart and Caledonia tartans for those persons who have no tie to a clan tartan (i.e. those whom would belong to a fictitious "Clan MacMutt!) was based on their long accepted use as "general" or "universal" tartans for those "without a tartan of their own".
They are beautiful, historical, and widely available tartans, supplied in a wide range of color schemes and fabric weights. The Hunting Stewart is a superb choice for day dress, whether in the modern, ancient, or weathered colors. The Caledonia tartan, being red-based, is a striking choice for evening wear, although I think a muted, ancient, or weathered version with look very nice as daywear, as well.
I am always a bit befuddled when folks looking for a non-clan tartan swoon over the new monochromatic fashion tartans or tartans like the Isle of Skye (although I admit it is attractive) and completely bypass these two. IMHO, Hunting Stewart and Caledonia are setts that "look like tartan should look".
Cordially,
David

Re: Clan MacMutt
I've an Ancient Caledonia Kingussie build kilt (from Keltoi) that I have a fondness for, a mixed ethnicity background that includes 1/16th eastern Cherokee as well as german, english, scottish, flemish, french, and italian flavors, so Clan MacMutt seems like a natural for me. But I also have a family paternal lineage affiliation with the "Clan" Forrester (a late 20th century organization), modern and hunting tartans and all (designed in the late 20th century), that I should probably maintain affiliations with rather than mixing allegiances along with my lineage.
Clan MacMutt sounds like fun for those seeking an affiliation and tartan, though.

I like the way you said that, and I agree completely. There are certain tartans (most of which are the old setts) that just look like proper tartans to me. Some of the newer ones just don't have the same soul. They may look nice, or have interesting colour schemes, or contain lots of significance to the pattern, but they just lack the same character that some of these original tartans do. And there's no real way to put it into words except to say, as you did, that they "look like tartan should look".
