Fun with pocket flaps: Part II--

Rolling with the "how to dress up a kilt jacket conversion pocket flap without removing it from the jacket" theme, let's add some piping to the flaps.

Again mark the center and quarter points with pins. Run the pin right down the center of the thickness of the fabric.

You want the pin to make a stiff ridge you can pinch with your fingers and stitch beneath.

Make a running stitch the height of the pocket.
Reverse direction and match your stitches (will look machine-stitched if you look closely). You will also keep the fabric from rippling/zig-zagging from side to side.

Thanks for the encouragement, Thomas. It's been a fun pair of projects.
It's comments like yours that make it worthwhile to document the process and post all the pictures.

I learned a few years ago (building wooden sea kayaks and 4x4 rockcrawlers) that every project is a sequence of small steps. Most of the small steps are very easy. If you can tackle the small steps, the overall project is easy. Just don't get overwhelmed at the start by the enormity of the overall project. You can't eat the whole elephant in one sitting!

Buy that thrift store tweed sportcoat already and get started! Worst case you don't like the finished product and you're out $5 but you learn something.
Best case, you like the finished project, you spent $5 on it, and...you learned something!

    Thank you!

The scallops should appear more rounded and not peaked. I need to press them tonight, and I'll repost pics.

    Hopefully my buttons come soon!

When they do arrive, please tell us about them--quality, finish, durability, etc.

They have a design that I really like, but I'm a bit hesitant to order until I find a no-malarkey review of their product. Thanks.

Nice job on the jacket. I think I may do something similar on the pockets of my next conversion after reading this.
