Sam Keen said, "First figure out where you're going, THEN figure out who's going with you." So you're doin' it right.
My favorite cities used to be Reno and Washington D.C. but that was 50 years ago. Reno might still make the list.
I've been writing options on index cards to follow up on. An olde geezer needs to be closer to health care than I am now - though a beautiful part of the World with four seasons.
Sort of gravitate to Ridgway & Ouray, Colorado in the summer to be near Orvis Hot Springs and someplace on Maui to be near Little Makena Beach.
Anyplace away from smog, heavy traffic, kids with automatic weapons under their shirts, and bad pollen on the wind.
Dang, you got me to thinking about this again.

Re: Where would you move?
Eastern Washington-
4 hours from Seattle / saltwater, etc.
<1 hour to Idaho
2 hours to Montana
2-3 hours to Oregon
2-3 hours from Canada (Several Points of entry.)
Close to Washington wine country
Definite 4 seasons with marine influence- Ave highs in 90's, lows in teens
public land everywhere-hiking, hunting, fishing.
Most guns hang on racks in your pick-up...mostly in the fall.
Very few natural disasters.
Friendly people.
Relatively low cost of living

Re: Where would you move?
I would have to say Rio de Janeiro.
My wife is a Carioca born and raised, and having been there 4 times, (once actually staying for 3 months) NEVER have I experienced such awe and enthusiasm for a schlocky yank (such as myself) in a kilt.
Brazil is a steadfast multicultural place, but is mostly of Portuguese, African, Native American, Italian and German influence.........
I went to an Iron Maiden concert back in 2003 while wearing my very first kilt... a Utilikilt copy sewed together by my mother-in-law in Rio de Janeiro...Hence my screen name Brasilikilt.
Anyways......I was greeted with an almost uncomfortable amount of attention from my fellow concertgoers...MEN! were actually asking to have their picture taken with me!?!?!?!
Anyways........Brasil is hungry for kilts and Scottish culture....
It's likely that one of these days I'll live there and bring a little more of it to them.
Wear your kilt proudly, but carry a big stick

Re: Where would you move?
Tennessee is where it's at in my opinion. Great weather almost all year round, low cost of living in most parts of the state. Fairly centrally located in the country with lots of things to do. I moved to here from Michigan and absolutely love it.

Re: Where would you move?
I'm originally from the northern sticks of MN. I'd love to get back there, but not sure I could deal with the winters after being away for so long. Been to almost every area in this country and they all have their pros and cons. I love being in the woods, but have grown accustomed to the convenience of city life. Right now I'm 5 minutes from anything I could ever want, and still have deer walking by my front door. But that comes with the problems of city life (drugs, crime, having to lock your door, etc.)
I'm not sure anymore where my dream home is. I always figured that if where I lived was perfect, I couldn't afford to live there
But if I had to choose something, I think I would split the difference between urban/rural and weather extremes and be somewhere in Michigan or Wisconsin. I need forest, hills, all four seasons, normal people, and a slow pace. Kinda have that here. Just wish I could live a bit further out of town without having a horrible commute time.

Re: Where would you move?
Many would say I already live in the most ideal place. Vancouver has the ocean, mountains, wicked hiking trails, lots of green space, wicked food options, culture and counter-culture...
I've been sick of it for quite a while. It's becoming overcrowded and dirty, and housing prices are beyond the pale (hence the website www.crackshackormansion.com).
It's certainly not a beachfront resort city, but I'd love to live in Ottawa. We spent a week there after a family wedding, and when we got back to Vancouver we both thought "We didn't see a single person hock a loogie on the street in Ottawa." So not an exciting choice, but one with pubs to lust after.
