The games took place on a small grass area and not on the asphalt. The pipe bands were very good. My mom spent a lot of time watching the dancing (she used to dance when she was a kid) and she really liked. The weather was perfect so it was a nice way to spend a day. If I'm in SoCal next year I'm sure I'll go again.
Your mother was very lucky. Unusually, the lineup for the adults included quite a few champions and world class competitors. At least three of the adults had competed at Cowal Gathering Highland Dance World Championships in August with one of them placing 5th and another getting high marks in the finals. Wish I could've been there.

Here are some pics from the Queen Mary Scottish Festival this past weekend:

Gathering of the Athletes Saturday morning:

Here's a picture of Alan, GGGP & Me:

This is me warming up with a 28 pound weight:

Throwing the 28-pound weight. This is why we don't recommend going regimented when competing :-)

Throwing the 16 pound Open Stone:

It was starting to cool off by the time we were tossing the sheaf:

Sorry no Caber pictures - it was after dark by the time we got to it.
