If you have never removed basting stitches, don't panic. It is easy. Only the first ones are knotted. You can carefully undo these with a pair of tweezers (for example). Then all the rest - the vast majority - are "sewn" to simply pull out. Once you reach them just use gentle tugs on the thread to remove them all.

By the way, what kind of Douglas kilt did you get? A picture would be fantastic. I'm in a Clan Douglas family, too. Welcome to the blog.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

Welcome from New Hampshire and just to reiterate what everyone's saying...
pull out the basting and only pin the outer apron.

Welcome from the highlands of Central Massachusetts! Don't risk any pulls or tears with the pin. Use it only if it is not going to hurt the kilt. I have found that they tend to rub hard going under the steering wheel when I get in the car.

from Pennsylvania Dutch country. Don't forget to check out the ten kilt looks thread. Some nice examples from two well dressed members. Enjoy the new addiction to Freedom.
"The Highland dress is essentially a 'free' dress, -- that is to say, a man's taste and circumstances must alone be permitted to decide when and where and how he should wear it... I presume to dictate to no man what he shall eat or drink or wherewithal he shall be clothed." -- The Hon. Stuart Ruaidri Erskine, The Kilt & How to Wear It, 1901.
