Re: Civil service decorations with the kilt?
First things first: VERY good to see you Jock!
Since I'm the lad who stirred the pot here, I feel I need to make a few things very clear: I respect and thank ALL those who serve the public, in any way.
Perhaps my distaste for wearing medals while kilted has to do with how I view wearing the kilt (My opinions on wearing military medals post militart service notwithstanding).
To me, the kilt is a garment I choose to wear. I wear it as often as I can, whenever and wherever I can. To me, it is worn in place of jeans, khakis, slacks, suits and even tuxedoes. Again, in MY opinion and my wearing of it, a kilt can, with coordinating attire, be worn at any occasion as the other items I listed. I do not see it as a special uniform or costume. I am perhaps very wrong in this thinking, but it is how I see things.
To this end, I personally would think it very silly for me to wear medals or ribbons in my out-and-about apparel (jeans, khakis, slacks, suit). I would also find it silly for me to wear them with a tux unless the specific event protocol required it.
So, I'm a fuddy duddy That's ok, I'm the same way about heraldry. I have issues, I know

The regs do state that minature medals MAY be worn on formal occasions with civilian attire, but I think this is because some of the formal uniforms require full size medals.
I am unaware that there are any regulations specifically for veterans since they are no longer bound by them, but I certainly stand to be corrected. Where would I find it?

The uniform regulations of each of the various armed services of the United States lay out the branch specific regulations for the wearing of military insignia, including medals, with civilian attire.
For example, Army Regulation 670-1 governs the wearing of US Army uniforms, insignia, and medals by active duty, reserve, retired, and former members of the United States Army.

Yes, I am aware of that, Scott. That's where I got the information I laid out in post #23 of this thread - from each branch's official regulations. Geoff contradicted what I had posted, suggesting that there were different regulations for USMC veterans. I was asking where those might be found because I am unaware of them.
Sorry for getting off task, Harold. I'll comment no more off topic in this thread.

Re: Civil service decorations with the kilt?
I have been looking at different ways of mounting these. The bar that the U.K. uses where they are stitched to the bar is really nice and I could do that myself.
I also really like the look of court mounting. Too bad it isn't used here in the U.S. or at least I havent seen it used.

Go figure after I said that I found a wicked tutorial on how to do your own court mounting and it looks super nice.
