A Modern-Day Duke in Scabal: His Grace the Duke of Argyll
Greetings,
Below is a link to wonderful article written in Scabal's Bespoken magazine, featuring an interview with His Grace the Duke of Argyll and a lively discussion regarding bespoke clothing. You can easily download the article in PDF format to your desktop.

His Grace the Duke of Argyll and Gregor Thissen, CEO of Scabal. Note His Grace's kilt hose in the deep/dusty pink colour - I have a similar pair of hose - works great with the 'ancient' green and blue colour scheme in the Campbell tartan.
I am also quite fond of the lighter coloured stag horn buttons on His Grace's jacket and waistcoat, which are indeed made of genuine stag horn. I am in the process of replacing all of my tweed jacket buttons, which have stag horn 'effect' buttons, with the real thing and in the lighter colour. HRH Prince Charles can be seen wearing the same style of buttons whilst in Highland day attire. Very smart and different look in my opinion.
"The kilt has to be in tune with
your body, you have to move as one. Just
like a bespoke suit a well made kilt is a
projection of your character. When I wear
the kilt comfort is all important and it
makes me proud to be a Campbell."

Thanks, Kyle, I've always liked the rather dusky pink color hose His Grace wears, as well. When one thinks "pink" hose, the image is not always complementary, but when seen in real life, it works very well with the ancient color tones of his kilt.

I agree completely, Matt. It is quite understandable that the 'dusty' pink colour does not work well with every tartan, nor for every taste, but it looks especially smart with its complimentray colour of green, shown in this case, in the Campbell tartan. Pink after all is a hue of red! It is also rather evident that His Grace thoroughly enjoys this colour of hose!

I have worn my deep pink/purple Chessboard hose made by House of Cheviot with my Macpherson Hunting tartans and I think it works rather well. And please do keep in mind, I am not attempting to perfectly match the hose to the tartan or vice versa, rather, allow the hose to contrast with the tartan of the kilt.

House of Edgar's 'modern' colours - Heavyweight.

Lochcarron's 'ancient' colours - Strome.

Cheers,

I'd never have thought that I'd be saying this but...
That Dusty Pink color does look good.
Matt, you're right. The term "Pink" hose does yeild to a rather non-complimentary thought.
I've found that most relationships work best when no one wears pants.

More than anything, I love the big, chunky cable-knitting on the cuffs of his hose. It's usually far more subtle than that.

Cheers,
Interestingly enough, historically speaking, pink was considered a "boy's" colour and light (or baby) blue a "girl's" colour.
Pink is a lighter shade of red (a very Martial colour) while light blue is the colour the Virgin Mary is always depicted wearing in Renaissance paintings. A short article can be found HERE on the topic.
It was really only after WWII that it became blue for boys and pink for girls.
Back on topic - His Grace is a very dapper chap. I love his sporran, and would LOVE to hear the history of it.

Bill aka Mole, I think you mistake the meaning of Matt's post, complementary and complimentary are dirfferent things

He's the Duke of Argyll, one of the leading peers in Scotland, so rightly so! He's also a very intelligent, confident, and successful person. I think you must possess 'guts' in order to do what he does - like running a 60,000 acre estate in Argyll and Bute!

I've seen those thickly cable-cuffed hose before and wondered if the cable is somehow knitted in that orientation or if the cuffs are knitted separately and attached. I should probably ask the question over at Ravelry but maybe Matt can ask Joanie (do I have her name right? it's early here. . .) if it is possible to knit that cable up-and-down, along with the rest of the hose, or only left-to-right in a separate operation.

Being slightly color blind I wont quibble but "dusty rose" would seem to me to be the appropriate name for the hose color.
