Back when there was still a chain of Simpsons dept stores in Canada my dad and I went in to the big one in downtown London to buy me a new suit for my high school grad. We separated, I went to the suits and dad was looking through the sweaters and stuff an aisle or so over. Dad had 3 or 4 of the sales guys walk up to him and ask if they could help, while I was studiously ignored as I stared at the suits on the rack. I removed one from the rack and asked if I could try it on but the guy was too busy following my dad to help me.
Eventually my father walked over and asked how I was making out. I told him that nobody would help me. We asked for, and found, the dept manager and Dad told him in no uncertain terms that his staff had ignored me completely while annoying him, and add that while we were shopping for my suit we were spending his money. And then he said we were going down the street to Eatons and would send a letter of complaint to Simpsons head office in Toronto.
I believe the Yiddish word for their reaction was 'plotz'

Yup. I remember that Simpsons' well... even before there was an Eaton's down the street! (Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner . . . .)

Derek:
I have found if somone makes a provocative comment, giving them the opposite response to what they expect has a real effect. Some idiot made a comment about wearing a skirt and so I said, "so I am and what of it" As I did not get belligerent or make a defensive remark he was shocked into silence.

I was only in the shop for not more than 5 mins and quite honestly cant be bothered by such people like this guy. I got better things to do .. in fact in less than 5mins after leaving the shop I was in a Jazz Cafe coffee house meeting with some friends and listening to some great live lite jazz music from a a very talented trio.
Meant to say also ... I went into the shop to buy cilt/kilt hose and by sure I was coming out with them, regardless of the guy and his obvious childish attitude. They are well made and cost £9 pair.

On the positive side: This thread makes me realize how fortunate we are to have the quality customer services of the many fine folks on this forum who provide us with many of our Highland apparel needs. I couldn't be more satisfied with the services I've received from the Dunadd Trading Company, USA Kilts, the STM, Peter Reid, and Barb Tewksberry to name just a few.

Twits seem to be randomly distributed across the face of the planet for provision of amusement. Do they also serve other functions?
