*** on the subtle metal. I think that jacket would look extra sharp with pewter buttons! If you really want to wear black for evening I'd say make this jacket as versital as possible and go with non-shiny buttons or something matching the jacket color.
As for being blue, I wouldn't sweat it. I've noted a number of blue, red, burgundy, purple, etc. etc. doublets. If you can go that formal and not wear black, then a blue argyle is okay I think. Even then, the pewter buttons would look good in an evening setting. It would be even nicer to have a waistcoat to go with it. It doesn't have to match. For many purposes a gray one would look really good IMO.
Overall, I think you look sharp! As a guy who is regularly the only one kilted I'm not sure how I'd feel in a room full of kilties if I was wearing the same jacket as them.
The grass is greener on the other side of the fence...and it's usually greenest right above the septic tank.
