I have a very similar jacket with horn buttons. OK, mine doesn' t have gauntlet cuffs. I happen to have a matching vest in Navy blue. This is going to be as dressy as I'm going to get, since I kind of can't see getting black tie stuff again. Yes, it's a bit odd, if everybody else is in black argyll's but then again, you look great and what law says that everybody has to look the same? It's not like you're grossly under-dressed or anything.

I think it looks fine, but not for a black-tie thing. There are still occasions for such a jacket. I'd keep the buttons, but if they bother you, opt for plastic, horn, or cloth-covered.

I'll throw my support in with ForresterModern, Zardoz, and others who suggest a button swap. That blue jacket could be every bit as formal as a black jacket of the same style if you wanted it to. What makes it look less formal in your photo is your choice of shirt and tie, not the jacket itself. Had you been wearing a shirt with studs and a black bow tie, I'm betting it would have presented itself on the same level of formality as the others in the photo.

But since you already have a black Argyll jacket, I'd keep this one blue and 'dress it down' by swapping out to pewter buttons, or brass buttons, or some other style that puts it more on the level of a blazer rather than a suit coat. Personally, I would stay away from horn buttons or leather-covered buttons, as those seem more suited to tweed jackets. But pewter and brass seem about right.

I never thought about the tie and shirt. Your right, that's what's making it look less formal than all the rest. I think I like the idea of dressing it down with different buttons. Added bonus - a pretty inexpensive fix.

Readers;
Rather than replacing the buttons, make the buttons removable- a good tailor can convert the coat to take removable buttons- it only needes a eyelet hole where the button was once sewn. Then you can use the coat with/ silver buttons, horn buttons, blue fabrick covered buttons, clan crest buttons, brass buttons or any button you like, for the occasion. Leave the coat just as it is, its a happy match with the tartan. There is the danger at formal events we(kilt wearers)will be like kilt clad penguins, a bit of colour is good.

I can't see the pic(s) from this computer, but I'll echo what some have said about button changing- yours may already be on those little pins for easy removal.

I believe a navy argyll is MORE versatile than the funereal black ones. It generally looks black enough at night and looks a sight better in full sun, but that is the opinion of a man who owns several navy blazers and only one black (tuxedo) jacket. A set of brass buttons would set off that blue nicely.

Just kidding, I'm a little envious. It IS a very nice jacket. If you dye it, you'll have to say it WAS a very nice jacket.
The button advice is sound if you want a more versatile jacket. But it is fine as it is.

Love that idea of the brass buttons MacLowlife. Blue and brass just seem to ooze class but not neccesarily formal.
