Well, never having been to Savannah, I can't help you too much. I'm a bit surprised some of the folks from GA haven't weighed in, yet. I understand there are a lot of historical sites and landmarks in the Savannah area well worth seeing, but if it were me, I would go up river and visit the Savannah River Site. But, that's just me - an old nuke guy from Los Alamos.

Used to live in Savannah. Huge Irish population there, and no shortage of Scots. They have Highland Games every year. Wear your kilt down to River St. (lots of cool pubs and shops) and you'll have a blast....

Kilts in Savannah won't get a second glance from many...especially in the Downtown/Historic District areas. Southside is very kilt friendly as well, parts of the Eastside you might get some insults around SSU.This site http://savannahvisit.comhas all you will need to find the attractions.
Old Fort Jackson has the Games the first weekend of May... a little early for the trip... 1 Fort Jackson Road,
Ft. Pulaski National Monument is a must for Civil War buffs, and just general history. This is the fort where rifled cannon was truly proven as an effective weapon of war.(Go down Victory Drive out towards Tybee... just before Tybee you will see it on the left.)
Museum lists:
The Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum, for the WWII buff. 175 Bourne Avenue, Pooler, GA 31322, dedicated to the 8th Air Force, the unit with the highest casualty rate of any American force in WWII and 17 Medals of Honor, 220 Distinguished Service Crosses, 850 Silver Stars, 7,000 Purple Hearts 46,000 Air Medals.
The Telfair Museum of Art, 121 Barnard Street Home of "The Black Prince at Crecy" by Julian Russell Story 1888
Ships of the Sea, an amazing collection of ship models. 41 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard
The Roundhouse Railroad Museum, a Antebellum rail yard, 601 W. Harris Street
Savannah History Museum, pretty much any history period from 1733 to present. 303 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd
The two cemeteries in town to visit if you like grave stone rubbings or just the beauty of them are Colonial Park Cemetery in downtown and Bonaventure Cemetery on the eastern side of town (330 Bonaventure Road
Thunderbolt) (Johnny Mercer's grave is a beautiful bench overlooking the Wilmington River, sadly some tourists have not been so respectful of the cemetery after the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil even to the point the famous Bird Girl grave statuary has been moved to the Telfair.)
Of course, you have to visit Molly's http://www.macphersonspub.com/Main/Home.aspx for dinner, which is trio of Scottish Pubs, at which the male staff members wear kilts.

But, what's wrong with all the staff members wearing kilts, a la "Tilted Kilt"?

Just south of Savanna is a small town named Darien. It was settled by Scots who were stationed at Fort King George http://gastateparks.org/FortKingGeorge/, the southern most outpost of the British Colonies. The fort was manned by Highlanders because all other British soldiers couldnt hang with the heat, bugs and isolation.

The first place my wife and I go to whenever we go to Savannah is Molly Macpherson's. It is one of our favorite places anywhere to hang out!! We usually stay out on Tybee Island (only about 15 min. from Savannah). The beach is on both the ocean and the river. Lots of dolphins hang out on the river side.

As a native Savannahian, just set out and explore the Historic district. The city is chock full with Historical stuff by US standards. You can also see the chain of fortifications through US History, 1. Ft. Wayne in the Historic District, 2nd Fort Jackson and few miles east on President St., 3rd, Ft. Pulaski mentioned in an earlier post and 4th Ft. Screven on Tybee Is. Ft. McAllister is a Civil War Fort (earthen) south of the city in Richmond Hill. My favorite restaurant in Savannah is Garibaldi's, it is a little pricey but well worth it. The Three Penny Pub on Bull St. is a good place to get a pint and a nice meal too. Enjoy my home town.
