    Re: Christmas Party for work.

While you handled it well and my first step in most circumstances would have been the same, my personality would require one more step.

In a conversational tone, ask to speak with him in private. Huddling in a broom closet isn't required, just step out of earshot. Tell him that joking and kidding is one thing. You're willing to play by big boy rules at work, but making back-handed comments to your wife is off limits.

Of course, I have no idea what the environment is at your place of employment.

And I agree with the last several posters. There isn't a 21 year old on the planet who is indispensable to a business. If he were struck by lightning, they'd have a replacement as or more competent by the end of the week.

The graveyard is full of people who couldn't be replaced.
I wish I believed in reincarnation. Where's Charles Martel when you need him?

    Re: Christmas Party for work.

In my humble opinion any work related event, especially if officially organised, is subject to the same rules of conduct that apply in the workplace. I strongly suggest that you should report this to your manager or HR department as an official complaint and let them deal with it in the appropriate manner.
If this is the first recorded transgression, the offender would normally be subject to a verbal warning. If this is a second or subsequent transgression then it should be dealt with as per you employers stated term and conditions of employment.
At some point someone has to draw a line in the sand and inform the miscreant of appropriate levels of behaviour at work, for his own sake.

    Ian

Agreement with Ian except for the setting.

Do it inside the HR manager's office with that manager and the bully / slanderer present.

Sadly, he'll probably find another victim.

    No, A McGrath.

I have often wondered if I would make a good smithy. I have been pounding on metal for years. Sometimes with heat, sometimes not. I am not a Blacksmith, but I was a fork Lift Mechanic for 30 years before getting out of the trade. But I do have several blacksmith hammers.

By the by, the "pounding on metal" comment: are you a smith?[/QUOTE]

I have read all the comments aand really appreciate the support. We are now at a standoff. No Apology,, but he tends to think about his words before he talks to me.

On a tangent, the Vice President of our company just passed away after a long illness. His memorial service is Sat and I think I will wear my kilt. He was the guy that stood up at the parties and told jokes. I was the brunt of several, but they were expected and really kind of funny. He will be missed by all here at Knorr Bremse, Westminster.

PS. I had female co worker come up to me after the party to tell me that she missed the kilt, but that I looked "damn good" in the suit. To each their own.
