And if you live in Australia, you can shop online anywhere in the world, and as long as the value of the goods that you are importing (for private use only) is under A$1000.00, you don't have to pay any customs charges/duties/GST whatsoever After all, we are known as the lucky country.

My wife and I honeymooned in Ireland, Scotland and England many years ago. We bought crystal in Ireland and china in England; both about the same value and not inexpensive. The Irish shipped it marked as a gift so we paid no duty, the English shipped it as a purchase for which we had to pay duty. Seemed totally in line with the personality of the two nations.

Some time ago, I purchased several bottles of whisky from a UK based internet retailer. I fully expected to receive a bill for import duties. Imagine my surprise when I received my package to find the customs declaration read "collectible glass."

You are a very generous man, John. Not sure that I would have replied so calmly.

Not exactly sure of the point you are making, but is it that one Country follows the law and one doesn't?

I felt the same way, Paul. I frequently have to ship items outwith the USA, and when I fill out the customs form I make sure they are accurate. I am in no way responsible for what someone's home country may or may not charge in customs fees, but I am responsible for how I conduct my own business.

We cannot be held responsible for that which we think, only for that which we post. You did fine, IMHO.
