So whether we like it or not the Ghillie shirt should be an acceptable form of dress.
No, I don't think tradition works that way. First of all, those shirts haven't been worn with the kilt long enough and second, a bunch of guys on an internet forum that connects very disparate places don't get to somehow decide what is going to be "added" to the traditions of Highland attire.
That being said, there are no Kilt Kops and if you like to wear a ghillie shirt, then do it; it is an acceptable form of dress. We could probably debate all day long where and when would be the best time to wear one, but that is a question of taste, not a categorical one.
I need to ask though, why does it have to be traditional? It isn't traditional. Full stop. If one still likes those shirts despite them not being traditional, then go for it! Go ahead and put together an outfit that is dashing, with a healthy amount of historical theatricality or even just wear it casually.
ith:
If one wants to dress traditionally, however, then give the ghillie shirt a miss.

Readers;
As I understand it( and volley forth- if you disagree) the "Errol McFlynn" shirts were a Hollywood version of a colonial shirt. Of note, in the antique text of Thompson, not a peep is said of them, so the Jaocbite/kit combo must be 'recent' after 1975? I make and use colonial shirts for my kilt- the LONG tailed sort of shirt-great for a windy day in kilt! Nice & fuffly & full without the string work around the neck(and getting tangled in my dogtag chain!) So, heck yes, wear one as a casual outfit. And remember the publick THINKS it OK with a kilt- so they will not be throwing turnips(is that the sterotype english vegatable-like Leeks for a Welchman?)at you for wearing one. Since there is a loathing on this board for the shirts, you should be able to buy a few here for a pittance apiece for members who bought one -'way back when'.

They're a modern and poor interpretation of 18th century shirts.
I made a couple out of linen about 17 years ago, before I knew any better.
Cheers!

So, while laced front, full sleeved, etc. shirts seem to have been around for a while, does anybody know when these shirts started showing up in the context of "kilt shirt"? I know the Thompson book from the 70's shows a "colonial" shirt, no laces though. Any of the catalog or photo collectors see them in your stuff?
I think if they pop up in the 1960s we can call them 'traditional', since some of the hoary old clothing and accessory traditions we adhere to are not much older than that historically speaking...

I have one. I wear it occasionally. I bought it before "I knew better". What I do know is that women like them and that's enough for me to keep it and wear it.

Well, true to my wife's word, I came home from work and was tossed a black shirt with orders to "put it on". I'm currently sitting here looking very much like a kilted Dread Pirate Roberts. But I did catch myself in the mirror and thought "You really ARE a sexy beast".
Don't see myself ever wearing this in public unless we do a renfair, but it's a darn comfy shirt when the temp outside is 90F. I've been standing in front of the fan trying to get the hair flowing (while keeping the mustache out of my mouth) and trying to pronounce Bahtah.
You won't see me in a restaurant in this, but I think there's a good chance that you'll see me on a romance novel cover soon.
The Scottish Rain Dance does appear to work. ;)

Ahhh, Mickio--you create such imagery...
I'm picturing this:

But then I recall the event related by your wife on post #20 in this thread...

This morning I was awoken by some very strange sounds. It seems Mickey got it into his head to try and model the only ones we have in our house... the feline version. (The same as pictures in my avatar, though she's put on 8 pounds since then.) While she's a striking animal, she's also half feral, quite unpredictable and all her pointy bits are fully intact.
I come down the stairs to see the love of my life in a kilt with an angry cat strapped to his crotch. The cat is howling, twisting and doing her best to inflict as damage as felinely possible. She must have had something important under one of those paws, because he stopped cursing and trying to wrangle her in order to let out a scream similar to something usually only heard coming from the mouths of little girls....
and all I'm left with is this:
Fabio and the flying goose

Either way, let it rain!
