Handmade kilt hose
My mom knitted these kilt hose. Got them for my birthday.
She is going to work a few more pair in different colors.

Nice, did she work from a pattern? It looks similar to one in from a book called something like "Folk socks" or "Knitting folk socks"I've learned how to knit and am almost done with my first pair(pics later) and they look great.BTW your mom rocks as you know.

Wow, those look great! Props to your Mum for the work! Nice subtle pattern there.
I am inspired! I shall locate decent non-woolly wool and knit my own kilt hose as I sit in my dripping Tesco tent this summer. As I'll be camping a LOT, this should result in several pairs of hose... or maybe just one, weird, mangled uber-scarf...
Any recommendations for good knitting patterns for a noob?

Wow. That is nice. My old mother could have done those some time ago. It is up to me now. Knit-a-cat, I know there is at least one good, free hose pattern out there but compu crashes and re-builds have left me without the link and only a printed copy. Google or the good folks here will likely provide.

I had three of these before and have just added a fourth! Now to just get started on the darn things. My mother maintains that they can't be started from the toe but perhaps it can. She can't imagine turning the heel from the toe. Also, good bit of advice, she recommends the first few rows, from the top down, in a larger size needle than the balance of the sock. That way it has more give to it for getting over the calf. Less snapping of yarn on the first pull.

Very smart indeed - your mother is quite talented.
Wouldn't mind a pair in a dark red, myself.

It is possible to make socks 'properly' starting at the toe - there are various methods, but I start off by knitting a small rectangle on two needles and then picking up the edges to start to knit in the round.
I make a left and a right sock - I knit on very small needles and there is little elasticity in the knitting.
After increasing the sole side to form the gusset I separate stitches in the centre of the sole side and knit a strip which goes under the heel, narrowing at the end. Stitches are picked up around the strip and the heel is knitted upwards, joining onto the gusset by doing K2 or P2 together at the ends of the heel, and making a couple of decreases in the back to shape the heel.
Once the heel and gusset are joined I go back to knitting in the round.
I am just in the process of making a pair - I have almost finished the gusset of the first one. I can take some photos and write out the pattern if it is of any help, but I have quite small feet so it would be only for guidance really.

My mother (long gone) used to knit socks, long and short for my dad, brother and myself. She used to use 4 needles and never used a pattern.
Me on the right.

Your mothers look brill.
Chris.
