Paul:
I understand that the UK has very restrictive knife laws, and that most folks view a sgian as an accessory rather than a functional blade, and are less concerned about the quality of the blade than the overall appearance.
My comment was not intended to denigrate your work (which I very much like), but rather as a suggestion to further enhance it. I suspect there are a number of people who would be unwilling to carry a knife, even one that's one that's largely ceremonial, that lacks a functional blade.
If possible, perhaps you might consider offering a "premium quality" blade might be available as an option?
Cheers,
SM

Nice work, Paul!
Personally, I have never been that overly concerned about a sgian dubh having a real (damascus, or whatever) blade or not - I am more concerned with how the handle and hilt looks, as well as the overall quality of construction and materials (genuine stag horn, ebony, silver, cairngorm, leather, etc). A well made stainless-steel blade is fine with me. Honestly, I never use a sgian dubh for anything but decoration in my right sock!
Cheers,

Fellow members of X Marks,
It is with regret that I have had to revoke the membership of the person using the username "Stubborn Stag". When they first registered to the forum I contacted them via PM with my personal welcome message. In that message I reminded them of our rules and policies. Specifically our policy on advertising which I quote for you here:
Advertising
Our members want access to a wide array of kilts and kilt related products and services. To provide this we have accepted paid advertising from companies who wish to present their products to our membership.
Advertising is defined as:
"A form of communication used to encourage, persuade, drive or induce an audience to take or continue some action concerning a commercial offering. It can be used to change or reinforce consumer behavior or offer assurances to consumers. Advertising often involves repetition of an image or product name in an effort to associate certain qualities with the image or name.
Advertising does not always involve the direct sale of a good or service. An example would be the case of a public service announcement. If the result is an increase in awareness of a good or service it is advertising."
Any member of the forum who produces a kilt or kilt related product and who wishes to advertise on the forum will be directed to our advertising plan for details of our ad space and rates.
No other advertising will be allowed with the exceptions as listed in this policy.
I also brought to their attention our policy on member profiles, graphics and signature blocks which again, I quote for you:
To keep our forum from looking like a bazaar we set these limits on the appearance of member profiles.
- All avatars, profile graphics, text and all content in a member’s profile are subject to all other rules.
- Usernames or avatars will not be, or contain, a Company name or Logo with the exception of paid advertisers.
- Avatars and profile graphics are limited to 100 X 100 pixels or 20,000 bytes.
- No dynamic or animated avatars or graphics are allowed.
- Signature blocks may contain up to a total of four lines of text or 500 characters. Text size may be 1 or 2.
- Fonts and Colors for text will be only those available to all members.
- Non commercial embedded links are permitted in signature blocks. Links are included within the text limits above. One embedded link may be to the member’s personal, non-commercial site.
- No commercial links, Company names or email addresses are allowed in Signature Blocks exept those granted to paid Advertisers under our Advertising Plan.
- Depending on their level of advertising, paid advertisers may be allowed their company logo as their avatar, a custom title, and one embedded link to their commercial website in their signature block.
As this member refused even the courtesy of a response to my PM's and has continued to conduct his business on the open forum in direct opposition to the published policy I had no other choice but to take this action.
We all participate on the forum as individuals. Even our advertisers are individual members first and formost. If this member would have simply sent me an alternate username perhaps this could have been avoided.
If they had responded to my invitation to meet our other advertisers on an equal playing field, to abide by and stay within the bounds of our rules and policies, perhaps I would not have had to do this is such a public manner.
Personally, I think the company "Stubborn Stag" would have been a great addition to this forum. If Paul will contact me and agree to keep within our published rules and policies perhaps this decision could be reversed. It is now up to him to decide what he wishes to do.
